Freeze Dried Dog Food

Facts about Freeze Dried Dog Food

All pet owners want the best nutrition for their furry friends and one of the newest ways to provide fresh and tasty meals for dogs is freeze dried dog food.  There are a few major advantages that this type of packaging has that will make owners take a closer look at this innovative food choice.

Freeze drying is a process that has been around since World War II, when a means of storing plasma for emergency triage use without it damaging the nature of the blood.  In early NASA days, the science was used to permit food to travel lengthy durations without spoiling.  The United States military has also found that foods prepared in this manner can keep the troops nourished even when in remote areas.  The actual process to render foods as freeze dried is a complex one that involves extracting all water from the food; first freezing it, then placing it into a vacuum chamber where nearly all of the moisture is removed.  Sealing it in airtight packaging is the final step.

By preparing food in this manner, the weight of the item decreases drastically.  This aspect poses several benefits to many; it can be carried in the spaceships easily, where total weight is crucial to the success of the flight.  Military personnel must carry their rations on their person when on hikes, so lightweight items are extremely beneficial.  In everyday life applications, anyone who hikes, travels in RVs or canoes will appreciate this feature as well.  In addition to the lighter weight, the food is also extremely long lived.  With virtually no water in the product, no bacteria or other contaminates can exist in the food.  No refrigeration or special considerations are required in storing or shipping the foods, making it even more durable.  Because of the great strides that were made in human foods being prepared in this method, it was only a matter of time before freeze dried dog food would make its debut.

A huge boon to the freeze drying of foods is that the nutrient content remains the same as it was for the fresh product.  While water may be mostly removed from the food, proteins, minerals, vitamins and other necessary elements remain intact.  What may be more important is that good taste remains, and when the food is properly prepared, it will hard to distinguish the freeze dried product from fresh food.  Stocking up on fresh tasting, nutrient rich dog food will be easy for anyone, regardless of how small the living space may be.

One of the difficult aspects of freeze dried dog food is that it can be harder to obtain than dried or canned food.  While these options are readily available in supermarkets or department stores, freeze dried foods will need to be purchased online.  This is mainly due to the fact that, while they are tasty, convenient and easy to store, they are also misunderstood by the majority of the population.  Many people don’t realize the benefits of freeze drying, and are reluctant to try something new.  Another drawback is in the cost; it is pricier than the standard bagged or canned foods.  Generally speaking, this is due to the fact that the food has higher quality as well as more nutritional value, but also because of the process involved in preparing it.

When the food is purchased, it takes just a short time to become accustomed to preparing it.  Once the food package has been opened, it should be treated as though it were fresh food.  Adding moisture to the dried contents will rehydrate the food for eating.

Pets such as dogs deserve to have nutritional and tasty meals on a regular basis, and offering them freeze dried dog food can be just what is needed.
